Everyone told us the Maldives was only for honeymoons and billionaires. We went anyway, spent ₹65,000 per person for five nights, and came back with the best holiday of our lives. The secret is guesthouses on local islands. Most travel content about the Maldives focuses on the overwater villa resorts — starting at $800 a night — and ignores the fact that since 2009, the government has allowed tourists to stay on local islands. This changed everything. Which Island to Choose We chose Maafushi, about 45 minutes by speedboat from Male. It has multiple guesthouses, a bikini beach (essential — most local islands have a designated swimming beach separate from the main beach where modest dress is required), snorkelling straight off the shore, and a little main street with cafes and dive shops. Other good options: Dhigurah (known for whale shark snorkelling), Fulidhoo (quieter, more local feel), and Ukulhas (an eco-friendly island with excellent house reef snorkelling). Getting There Fly into Male — IndiGo and Air India fly direct from Delhi and Mumbai. Fares vary wildly; we booked three months ahead and paid ₹18,000 return per person. From Male airport, a public ferry to Maafushi costs around $3 and takes 1.5 hours. A speedboat transfer is $25 and takes 45 minutes. What to Do The Maldives is an underwater destination. Even if you do not dive, rent a snorkel and mask and spend your mornings in the water. We saw turtles, reef sharks, manta rays, and more fish than we had names for — all within swimming distance of the shore. Day trips to uninhabited sandbank islands are a must. Our guesthouse arranged one for $35 per person — a boat ride to a strip of white sand with nothing on it but ocean on all sides. Sunset dolphin cruises happen almost every evening and cost about $25. On our second evening, we counted over 200 dolphins.
